10 Amazing Netflix Documentaries You Must Watch

With all the recent Harry & Meghan hype. And because it’s Christmas, we’ve recently signed up to Netflix again. I am enjoying the Netflix documentaries currently available.

Here is my list of must-watch Netflix documentaries…

Misha and the wolves

Synopsis

As a little girl, she escaped the Holocaust and lived among wolves. Or did she? An extraordinary story elicits sympathy — then draws scrutiny.

My thoughts

What an enthralling watch. One of the best Netflix documentaries I’ve watched. My hubby and I were literally shouting at the TV. So many twists and turns and the conclusion will leave you feeling both sad and angry.

Last Breath

Synopsis

A commercial diver becomes trapped on the ocean floor with dwindling oxygen and little hope of a timely rescue, so he tries to save himself.

My thoughts

It’s filmed in such a way that has you on edge the whole way through. And I must admit, I was expecting a horrible ending. The sadness of those who went through the experience touches you.

Beautifully filmed. Please go watch this extraordinary experience.

Stutz

Synopsis

In candid conversations with actor Jonah Hill, leading psychiatrist Phil Stutz explores his early life experiences and unique, visual model of therapy.

My thoughts

Not only do you get an insight into the amazing techniques, all for free. But it’s wonderful to explore the relationship they have.

In the UK, some of the content could be considered “crossing a client, therapist boundary”. But you know what, they have some profound similarities between them and I’m really glad they have this relationship with each other.

How to change your mind

Synopsis

Author Michael Pollan leads the way in this docuseries exploring the history and uses of psychedelics, including LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and mescaline.

My thoughts

I find it so fascinating, to explore how psychedelics actually change your brain. And how cultures and doctors have used them to treat patients and heal.

Tell me who I am

Synopsis

In this documentary, Alex trusts his twin, Marcus, to tell him about his past after he loses his memory. But Marcus is hiding a dark family secret.

My thoughts

It is a difficult watch, but so fascinating to view how abuse and trauma from abuse are complex. It features twins who are deeply connected trying to save themselves and each other pain. And I find it fascinating how each individual human being needs different things to be able to move on from traumatic events. It really cements the idea, there is no one size fits all approach.

The Imposter

Synopsis

An investigator sets out to unravel a mystery about a 13-year-old boy who vanished in Texas only to show up three years later in Spain.

My thoughts

A fascinating story of how someone pretended to be an abductee who returned. The family wanted their loved one back but noticed significant differences in the person before them. A gripping story.

Capturing the Killer Nurse

Synopsis

This documentary reveals how investigators proved ICU nurse Charles Cullen was killing patients — and how close he came to getting away with murder.

My thoughts

This documentary is fantastic. Everyone involved tells a compelling story of how systematic failures led to deaths. It’s astounding that this nurse worked at nine hospitals before being suspected of murdering patients.

Watching this led me down a rabbit hole. I loved this story so much, I immediately watched the other Netflix film based on the true events.

The Good Nurse

Synopsis

An overburdened ICU nurse leans on her selfless new colleague at work and at home — until a patient’s unexpected death casts him in a suspicious light.

My thoughts

This tells pretty much the same story as the documentary but is slightly more dramatic and from the characters’ perspective. Depends on whether you like the documentary format above dramatisation. I enjoy both.

The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder

Icarus

Synopsis

In his Oscar-winning film, an American cyclist plunges into a vast doping scandal involving a Russian scientist — Putin’s most-wanted whistleblower.

My thoughts

It’s so exciting to watch. The fact this started as an experiment and then became so much more is intriguing. Definitely worth a watch.

Ancient Apocalypse

Synopsis

Journalist Graham Hancock travels the globe hunting for evidence of mysterious, lost civilizations dating back to the last Ice Age.

My thoughts

Such a compelling watch. The series provides an alternative to what archaeologists and other scholars think about history. Because there is no evidence, some of these theories are plausible.

Until next time
