Using Reading as a Relaxation Technique is something I frequently do. And I know other people get great benefits from reading books.
Let’s look at the great reasons to dive into a book…
Reading can reduce stress
A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. This technique allows you to enter into an imaginary world and step away from any stressors in your life.
Reading is practising mindfulness
I try and practice mindfulness and positive thinking in all activities I participate in. Letting go of distracting thoughts and judgements for a while. Getting lost in a story – it’s one of the best ways to practice mindfulness.

Reading can expand your knowledge and broaden your horizons
They say all writers should read various texts. To expand our knowledge of characters and words. You can learn about different cultures and experiences. Which will essentially open your mind to new experiences. Or a greater understanding of some of the experiences other people go through. Even if you haven’t personally experienced it.
Reading can help you show empathy for other people
Well-shaped characters make you fall in love with them. In turn, you start to show empathy for their struggles as the story goes on.
Reading can help your brain
It is proven that reading can help retain your memory muscles in the brain. Slowing down memory loss or mental decline. What a great reason to sit down and get lost in your favourite book today.
Summary
I am planning to write more blog posts about reading. To keep me accountable on my reading journey. There is nothing better than sitting down with a hot cup of coffee and a good book.
I’ve been reading all my life and I definitely use it as a relaxation technique. Sometimes when I’m really overwhelmed or stressed, just settling in to a book is such a huge release.
Such a great relaxation technique. I am finally getting back into reading.
